Product Description

Build confidence in your gardening decisions with research-based guidance from Iowa State University experts.

Garden Academy is a self-paced, online horticulture course offered by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach and the Iowa Master Gardener Program. Designed for adult learners, the course builds a strong foundation in horticulture and practical gardening skills.

Through engaging video lectures, readings, and knowledge checks, participants gain skills they can apply in home gardens and landscapes. Content is aligned with the Iowa Master Gardener curriculum and adapted for flexible online learning.

This course also serves as the core horticulture training for Iowa Master Gardener volunteers. Enrollment in the Home Gardener track does not confer Iowa Master Gardener status. Individuals interested in becoming certified volunteers should contact their local Extension office prior to registering.

Participants have access to all course materials for 12 months from the date of purchase.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to:

  • Apply research-based practices to successfully grow and maintain vegetables and ornamental plants in Iowa conditions.

Intended Audience

This course is ideal for adult learners, home gardeners, homesteaders, and green industry professionals seeking a comprehensive introduction to horticulture for home landscapes and gardens.

Course Format & Requirements

Garden Academy is delivered through Moodle (an online learning platform). The course includes approximately 10 weeks of content organized into 8 modules, which participants complete at their own pace.

To earn a certificate of completion, participants must complete:
  • A pre-course assessment
  • All required lecture videos
  • A final assessment with a score of 70% or higher
Course Materials & Assessments

Participants receive access to a digital textbook, the Garden Academy Resource Guide. Printed copies are available for purchase through the ISU Extension Store.

Assessments include:
  • 100-question pre-course assessment (no minimum score required)
  • Optional knowledge checks within each module
  • 100-question final assessment (unlimited attempts; 70% required)
